Five inches of snow and counting in Grand Valley

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. January is leaving winter in its tracks with more than 5 inches of snow in some parts of the Grand Valley.

As of 11 a.m. Friday, the National Weather Service measured 5.5 inches of snow near the Grand Junction Regional Airport.

Meteorologist Jim Pringle said he expects to see another inch or so by Friday night when the storm will then begin to taper off.

The dense, wet snow is a result of recent warm temperatures, Pringle said.

"The temperatures not being as cold as say what we experienced in early December when that snow fell in much colder air and, therefore, the snow that fell was much less dense," he said.

Grand Junction only saw 1.4 inches of snow accumulation in January 2013 compared to this month's 5.7 inches.

However, this January's average temperatures have been ten degrees higher than January last year.
