FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO)-- Colorado's triathlon season got a little bit longer after today's first-ever Desert's Edge Triathlon at Highline Lake State Park in Fruita.

"It's late in the season. There are no other triathlons with open water swimming in October," said Darrin Eisman, race director. "I have all kinds of people asking me when are you going to bring a triathlon out to the Western Slope, so finally this year, we said let's just do it."

Four-hundred tri-athletes from across the country participated in today's race, each with their own reason for competing.

"What I'm doing is setting a good example for my children and pursuing a healthy lifestyle," said tri-athlete Dan Schroder of Breckenridge. "We want them to have a healthy life and make good choices, and with our issues across the nation-- obesity being one of the epidemics-- we like to set a good example right off the bat."

For 35 members of Colorado State University's triathlon team, Desert Edge is a qualifying race for nationals.

"We want to definitely finish top 10, and I think we've definitely got a shot at doing that at nationals this year, or even better than that," said the team's president Justin Freyermuth.

Competitors could choose an Olympic distance race or shorter sprint race. The Olympic consisted of a1,500 meters swim, 24.8 miles bike ride, and a 10K run, while the sprint triathlon was half those distances.

Eisman said he plans to bring the triathlon back again next year.

"In Colorado, the triathlon season has just gotten saturated," Eisman said. "There's so many races now and having one out here is a different venue than most people have ever bike and ran and swam. And with the weather, you can go a little later in the season."
