GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- One of Mesa County's programs to combat homelessness is back in action.

At the beginning of the year, the Grand Junction Police Department temporarily reassigned their homeless outreach team (HOT) officers to normal patrol duties because of vacancies on the patrol unit.

But some officers recently completed their training for patrol, allowing the HOT officers to return to their jobs.

"We get a number of calls about homelessness daily, and so having people specifically trained who have built relationships with the homeless people and service providers, they're able to better enforce the law and even solve crimes, allowing the rest of our officers to do the other things that are going on," said GJPD spokesperson Kate Porras.

There are two officers on the HOT. Officials say they are busy year-round taking calls related to homelessness.
