Greeley-area man accused of killing wife

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) -- Authorities have arrested a 29-year-old Ault man accused of killing his wife on Christmas Eve 2011.

Matthew Patrick Gunsallus was arrested at the Greeley Police Department on Friday night when he arrived to pick up some of his belongings that were used as evidence against him in a rape trial this week. He was acquitted in that separate case.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Susan West tells The Greeley Tribune (http://bit.ly/YLS2Jx) that investigators didn't have enough evidence to charge Gunsallus in the death of 25-year-old Kristen Elizabeth Lujan until Gunsallus' sister forwarded them a letter her brother allegedly wrote to her in July, acknowledging he killed Lujan.

Gunsallus is accused of suffocating Lujan by covering her face with a pillow during an argument. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder involving domestic violence.
