WASHINGTON (AP, KKCO) -- Gun control groups are holding rallies around the country today aimed at pressuring senators to back the effort.

And President Barack Obama is meeting at the White House with gun violence victims.

Gun control supporters are struggling to win over moderate Democrats for their drive to push expanded background checks through the Senate next month.

A $12 million TV advertising gun control campaign is being financed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Mayors Against Illegal Guns released its first television ad, which features families of victims of the Sandy Hook shooting.

Protestors gathered in Golden and Denver today for the National Day to Demand Action, partnering with Hunters Against Gun Violence to show support for comprehensive background checks.

Representatives met with Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Udall to voice their concerns, according to a release from the group.

Thirteen Colorado mayors are listed on the Mayors Against Illegal Guns website as coalition members:

  • Mayor Matthew Appelbaum: Boulder

  • Mayor Michael B. Hancock: Denver

  • Mayor Randy P. Penn: Englewood

  • Mayor Marjorie Sloan: Golden

  • Mayor Carolyn Cutler: Lafayette

  • Mayor Bob Murphy: Lakewood

  • Mayor Robert Muckle: Louisville

  • Mayor Marc A. Snyder: Manitou Springs

  • Mayor Joe Gierlach: Nederland

  • Mayor Joyce Downing: Northglenn

  • Mayor Don Stephens: Salida

  • Mayor Andrew Muckle: Superior

  • Mayor Stuart Fraser: Telluride
