Hash oil extraction continues to cause explosions

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. A recent explosion in Denver and similar incidents across the country are reaffirming the dangers of making hash oil at home.

With the legalization of marijuana in Colorado, law enforcers said they've found more people are looking for higher concentrated THC products.

Do-it-yourself hash oil needs a flammable liquid like butane to extract the THC from the marijuana and it's most often made in enclosed basements and rooms adding to the risk of explosion.

"Between the amateur status and the volatile chemicals and the locations they're doing it, it's just a very deadly combination," said Jim Schrant, of the Drug Enforcement Agency.

The Grand Junction Police Department found hash oil extract to be the most likely cause of the explosion at the Monument Inn on North Ave. on March 9.

Drug enforcement agents said the hash oil extraction process has similar risks to making meth.
