CLIFTON, Colo. (KKCO) – A large pile of hay goes up in flames this afternoon, threatening a house and shed on the property.

The fire sparked at 623 35 Road near Mt. Garfield Middle School in Clifton just before 2 p.m.

A barn and a house sit close to the hay, but firefighters were able to control it before the structures were set on fire as well.

Two engines are on site to help extinguish the blaze – one from Palisade and one from Clifton.

It is not fully extinguished at this time. Firefighters say a fire like this is hard to put out because the loose, ignited straws can fly away when sprayed and spread the flames.
