GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- The days are numbered for an American classic. Friday, Hostess Brands closed up shop, meaning the end of Twinkies, cupcakes and more.

Some of the stores around the Grand Valley told us they haven't seen any crazy rush to the snack aisle for the other Hostess products, but Twinkies are no where to be found.

"It saddens me that my kids will probably never enjoy a Twinkie or a fried Twinkie,” Deana Tuttle said. "Just enjoying it as a kid I never thought there would never be one."

It's been a staple in the snack aisle since 1930, but after its second bankruptcy filing in the last decade and a week long strike from workers, Hostess Brands is now officially shutting down operations.

Thirty Hostess plants across America are shutting down instantly, and 18,500 people are now left without a job.

"I think it's sad. I think it's definitely the end of an era, and I think Hostess is something that we're all familiar with, and it's going to be kind of weird never being able to see it," said Camille Peterson, a cashier with Western Convenience on Broadway.

At her store, Twinkies were gone before Friday was even half over.

"There was a customer that was informed that Hostess was going out of business so they had to make sure that they bought the last Twinkie," she said.

Along with Twinkies, Wonder Bread Cupcakes and a host of other iconic Hostess brands are now finished, breaking the hearts of junk food fans across the country.

"We did have a customer after he was rung up and leaving the door, turned around to come back and buy one last Zinger, he said it was going to be an antique," Peterson said.

Hostess is planning to sell off its brand names, so you could still see Twinkies and Ho Hos released under a different owner some time in the future.

More than 500 distribution centers and 500 bakery outlet centers are expected to close up soon as well. Thousands of workers were striking after rejecting a contract offer that cut wages and benefits.
