GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- Grand Junction resident Kim Reeves has been hunting for as long as she can remember.

"I just grew up with it," Reeves said. "In my family, when you could hold a gun, you pretty much held a gun."

Reeves said when she was younger, she used to be the only girl she'd see out hunting. Now, she regularly sees fellow female hunters.

"I think women need to know that it's OK to hunt," Reeves said. "It's not just men anymore, and we can provide the meat for our families too just as easily as they can."

Hunting is largely increasing in popularity among women, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which shows women's participation in hunting has increased 46 percent since 2001.

Today, Cabela's held an event targeted at this growing demographic. "Ladies' Night Out" featured hands-on seminars, giveaways and discounted prices. Lauren Truitt, Cabela's event coordinator, said the event aimed to expose women to outdoor sports in a comfortable learning environment.

"It's something that not only preserves land but promotes ethical stewardship of the land and promotes just a love for nature," Truitt said. "I think it's a heritage factor, and a lot of men are bringing their families into it, especially their daughters."

Cabela's Softlines Manager Mark File said he's seen an increase in the number of women coming through the store's doors.

"There's just an up-tick in interest in this area in particular and hunting in general, and I think you've got a lot of women who've grown up with hunting in the background and having an interest in it and they're just coming of age," File said.

For Reeves, the day was about spending time with her family over a common interest in hunting.
