FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO) Even though we haven't quite hit Halloween yet, now is the time to start thinking about helping those in need for the holidays.

As we approach the Thanksgiving and Christmas 'seasons', the need for food and goods donations is apparent again.

"Unfortunately because of the downturn in the economy several years ago, higher gas prices, higher grocery prices, a lot of people are still struggling to keep up," said Starlene Collins of the Western Slope Food Bank of the Rockies.

Food banks are always open, but one organization has a different approach.

Hope of the Grand Valley has been around for half a decade and matches up donor families with recipient families in order to help lift the Christmas gift burden off of working families that may be struggling.

"So we're looking for parents with children under the age of 16 that are working, and they're just making too much to qualify any government assistance," said Vicki McGee, founder of the organization.

They all say however, any way to give is appreciated.

The Salvation Army is also now taking food and toy applications, Monday through Friday, now available through December 6.

Just head to their location on fourth avenue and bring these things:

-Bring picture ID for each person
-Utility bill or lease agreement
-Proof of income
