Local marijuana market uncertain

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Governor Hickenlooper made history today by signing several bills creating a framework for a regulated marijuana market.

Some of the laws include a limit on how much marijuana out-of-state visitors can purchase at one time. Also, licenses for marijuana shops will initially be limited to those who already are licensed to distribute medical marijuana. Another law makes it a crime to share marijuana with anyone under 21 and mandates child-proof packaging for marijuana sales.

Local and county governments have the ability to ban pot sales, even though the state has legalized it.

The City of Grand Junction is currently under a moratorium and will not address any marijuana-related issues until the moratorium is lifted.

"Right now it's just everyone doing their own reading, studying on their own,” said Sam Susuras, Grand Junction Mayor. “We're not doing any public discussions or even any private discussions on the issue."

Susuras said the city has until October 1st to come up with a plan. While the mayor said he will vote to prohibit pot shops, he didn’t know how the other council members will vote.

Mesa County Commissioner Rose Pugliese said the commissioners feel they have a pretty clear idea of what Mesa County residents would like.

“Amendment 64 did not pass in Mesa County and pretty much every time marijuana has been on the ballot, it has not passed in Mesa County,” Pugliese said.

Mesa County Commissioners will be attending a state-wide commissioners’ conference next week specifically addressing marijuana issues on a county level.
