Man shot by Montrose police officers after pointing weapon at them

MONTROSE, Colo. Montrose had its second officer-involved shooting in six weeks, something the commander of the Montrose Police Department, Gene Lillard, said is unusual for the area.

"We're actually real surprised that this has taken place," Lillard said. "We know that the potential is always there whenever a police officer puts on a uniform and goes to work. It’s always in the back of their minds that this may happen. This has come true a couple times for us here in the past 6-8 weeks."

Police responded to reports of a disturbance at a home in a neighborhood at 901 65.30 Road at 10 p.m. Sunday.

After talking to family members, police officers went to go check the welfare of the 42-year-old man who lives in the house. When the man threatened them with a gun, the two officers shot him, the Montrose Police Department said.

Neither officer was injured and both were put on paid administrative leave.

The man was taken to Montrose Memorial Hospital then airlifted to St. Mary's in Grand Junction with undisclosed gunshot wounds. His condition has not been released.

The 7th Judicial District Critical Incident Shoot Team was activated Sunday night. It's standard procedure for a critical response team is called in whenever there is an officer-involved shooting. There is no determination yet whether or not the situation was a suicide by cop.

The last officer involved shooting was on July 14. The results of that investigation are still pending a decision from the district attorney.
