GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) Mind Springs Health, formally know as Colorado West Mental Health, recently changed its appointment method for psychiatrists to open access, walk-in based visitation.

Patients are expected to come in during the day and they can wait upwards of two hours to either be seen by a doctor that day or later in the week.

The change came after officials noted 40% of all clients that made appointments to see a psychiatrist never showed up. With the high demand of seeing these doctors, this new method will not waste the doctors time and will allow people who want help to get it.

Michelle Hoy, Regional Director of Mind Springs, said the usual wait time for an appointment could be up to four months, but now patients wait at most 14 days to see a psychiatrist.

However, Joseph Grawe said he decided to go see another doctor after he realized he could not make an appointment.

Grawe said his busy school schedule does not allow him to have a flexible schedule and he does not have time to wait around for a doctor to become available.

Mind Springs still accepts appointments for visits with therapists.
