MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) The fall open burning season begins September 1 and continues through October 31. All residential and commercial open burning in Mesa County requires a permit from either a local fire department or the Mesa County Health Department. Some districts also require permits for agricultural burning and/or notification of burns prior to ignition.
Allowed materials to be burned include agricultural debris, dry weeds, garden debris, tree, shurb or brush trimmings less than one inch in diameter and recreational bonfires using clean (untreated) wood for fuel.
Prohibited materials to be burned include leaves, grass trimmings, limbs greater than 1 inch in diameter, garbage or household trash, construction, or demolition waste, rubber, plastic, waste petroleum or other materials that release toxic waste.
Instead of burning, Mesa County residents are encouraged to use the Mesa County Organic Materials Composting facility located at Mesa County Solid Waste, 3071 U.S. Highway 50. The facility, open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, accepts the following organic materials for composting for FREE of charge: grass clippings, tree limbs, unpainted/untreated lumber, hay and/or straw.
