Move over for Colorado State Patrol

MESA COUNTY, Colo. It happens all too often, law enforcement officers who are there to ensure our safety being put in danger by reckless drivers.

In 2013, seven patrol cars were totaled; in 2012 and 2011 combined there were only two.

Trooper Dan Chermok was in one of those accidents in early December, and it took him out of uniform for more than a month.

"We're going to have to get this stopped in one way or another," says Trooper Chermok. "If this trend continues I see more troopers with serious injuries and god for sake hopefully we don't get anybody killed out there."

There's actually a simple solution that's already in place to fix this trend.

Colorado state law says any driver approaching stationary emergency vehicles with lights flashing must get out of the lane closest to them, or at least slow down to a safe speed until you've passed the scene.
