GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - If you shop online, you might have noticed a new surcharge over the past couple days.

Forty states are now allowed to pass the fee credit card companies charge them onto their customers, but for Colorado and nine other states, it's illegal for businesses to charge the customers this fee.

However, if you buy online and the company is in one of those 40 states, you do have to pay that additional charge.

Just because we don’t have this charge locally doesn’t mean we aren’t paying it at some businesses.

"They may not have told you up front that they were charging this fee; it was built into the price at some point in time. The merchant wasn't going to eat that," said Mike Berry, a certified financial planner.

The additional fee can be anywhere from 1.5 to 4 percent.

But that's only on credit card purchases. Debit card and cash transactions will not include any extra fees in any state.
