GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- An arrest warrant reveals new information about a standoff on Horizon Drive that closed the road and caused lockdowns at nearby businesses.

On April 11, officers were dispatched to Mesa Inn at 704 Horizon Drive to arrest 23-year-old Skylar Kesterson, according to a Grand Junction Police arrest warrant. He was wanted for the Cash into Check armed robbery in September 2012, as well as felony menacing.

Officers say they were told that Kesterson was armed with a small .22 caliber pistol and had been using cocaine inside room 107 of Mesa Inn.

When they asked him to exit the room, Kesterson refused. At that point, the SWAT team was called in and Horizon Drive was shut down around the hotel. Rooms around Kesterson's were evacuated, and businesses in the area were told to shelter in place and lock their doors.

Kesterson stayed on the phone with police during the incident, making violent statements and continuing to use cocaine, according to the affidavit.

The SWAT team finally threw gas in to the room, and Kesterson was forced out. Officers took him into custody without further incident and searched the room. Inside, they found a small pistol and drug paraphernalia.

Kesterson was taken to the Mesa County Jail initially, but the affidavit says he had to be transferred to the hospital for medical issues related to controlled substance abuse.

Several days later, he was readmitted into the jail, where he is being held on a $100,000 bond for aggravated robbery, failure to leave premises upon request of a peace officer, possession of weapons by a previous offender, obstructing government operations, resisting arrests, controlled substances, prohibited use of weapons and possession of drug paraphernalia.
