GJPD: No threat at Nisley Elem., Orchard Ave. Elem., Bookcliff Middle

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) UPDATE: Police received reports of a person walking near the schools carrying a rifle. Officers made contact with the person and have determined there is no longer a threat to the schools, according to GJPD spokesperson Kate Porras. The rifle in question was a toy rifle.

Officers detained the suspect, who is a minor. After a brief period of detainment the minor was released to their parents. No charges are being filed.

Nisley Elementary, Orchard Avenue Elementary, and Bookcliff middle are now clear and returning to normal operations.

Porras released this statement regarding the event: "The 911 Communication Center received a call at 9:00am from a person who reported seeing a man walking down the 2800 block of Mesa Ave with what they thought was a rifle. As a precaution we called for lockdowns at the above schools while a number of officers went through the neighborhood looking for the man. We identified the suspect, who is a juvenile male who was in possession of a toy rifle. The schools are transitioning to shelter in place now so they can resume normal operations."

At approximately 9:10 a.m. sources reported that Nisley Elementary school was put on lock-down.

Then at approximately 9:15 a.m. Christy McGee, spokesperson for Mesa County School District 51, confirmed that Nisley Elementary, Orchard Avenue Elementary, and Bookcliff Middle school are currently on lock-down.
