Obama nominates Kerry for secretary of state

WASHINGTON (AP) -- John Kerry won't need "a lot of on-the-job training," according to the man who's chosen him to be the next secretary of state.

President Barack Obama says there are few people who know as many world leaders, and who understand U.S. policies, as Kerry does.

The Democratic senator and former presidential candidate is expected to easily be confirmed by his Senate colleagues.

He would succeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Obama's second-term Cabinet. Clinton did not attend the Roosevelt Room announcement. She's recovering from a concussion sustained in a fall.
