GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- By now, most of your gifts are probably wrapped and sitting underneath the Christmas tree, but if you're like some Americans, grabbing a last minute gift also meant trying to avoid the crowded shopping malls, instead taking your shopping to the internet.

Since November 1, online holiday shoppers have spent almost $37 billion, up 16 percent this year. A big part of that is from heavy spending late in the season, spending that local businesses want inside their doors instead of over the web.

"It is an experience. You get a variety of things, you get to check around, maybe not just some nameless bloggers pick for the thing. You get to compare toys," said Mike Allen, who has owned Toys for the Fun of It for 18 years.

"Experienced a lot of show rooming this year, where people come in. They're checking prices on their smartphones; they might actually be ordering on their smartphones in the store,” Allen said.

Last week alone, consumers spent 53 percent more online compared to last year. Researchers say a big reason is because "free shipping day" fell on a Monday.

Free shipping day is the last day online orders are guaranteed to arrive by Christmas, where more than 1,000 businesses offer free shipping on their orders.

Last Monday, buyers grabbing last minute gifts spent more than a $1 billion in online shopping.
