GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- The City Planning Commissioners approved a project that will transform the area around the old Gene Taylor's Sporting Goods store into a new facility with a storage yard.
Many residents from the neighborhood went to the hearing hoping to sway the commissioners' decision.
Those living in the area are concerned the storage yard will be an eyesore and drop property values.
Juanita Trujillo, resident of the El Poso neighborhood, said she has lived there her whole life and she and her family have been working to improve the community for more than 90 years.
"We have worked too hard to take this kind of hit; this type of development would decrease our property values by as much as $7,000 dollars," said Trujillo.
The project will bring a brand new building where Gene Taylor's is now and an adjacent storage yard.
SBC Archway LLC is the company putting in the building. The space will be used by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
The storage lot will be located at 302 West Ouray Avenue, which is also the entrance to El Poso.
Residents of the neighborhood are discussing appealing Tuesday night's decision and the planning commission hearing.
