CRAWFORD, Colo. (KKCO) - A man is dead and a Montrose County Sheriff's deputy is in the hospital after a shooting near Crawford.

At 1:49 a.m. Monday morning, deputies responded to a domestic violence call in the Crawford area, according Montrose County media relations manager Katie Yergensen.

Arriving at the reported house, they met with the female victim and approached the door.

When deputies knocked, a suspect fired two shots at them. Corey Larsen was shot twice- once in the abdomen and once in the chest. Emergency crews airlifted him to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, where he underwent surgery.

"He's out of surgery, and everything went well. He's in stable condition. His bullet proof vest definitely saved his life," said Sheriff Rick Dunlap.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office SWAT team, Special Response Team and Delta County Sheriff's Office were called in to assist Montrose County officers in getting the suspect out of a house.

When they got inside, officers found a deceased man. The Colorado Bureau of Investigations will be investigating the incident and body.

“At this point in time, the Montrose County Coroner’s Office, is only releasing the fact that a death has occurred and other information will be released when the appropriate studies and examinations have been performed," said Dr. Thomas Canfield, Montrose County Coroner.

During the shooting, a portion of Highway 92 near Deadwood Trail was closed due to the police activity.
