Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) – Roman Catholics all over the world were shocked Monday morning when Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation. Elected in 2005 to the papacy at age 78, Benedict XVI was the oldest pope chosen in over 300 years.

Now at the age of 85, he says health issues are the reason for his decision, explaining that he is incapable of performing his duties any longer.

Normally the pope serves until his death, and the resignation has Catholics around the world talking.

"They need to have an active leader, and so it is a great idea for him to step down and give the church an opportunity to keep moving forward,” says Grand Junction resident Christopher Pain, who grew up Catholic.

A pope has not resigned since Gregory XII in 1415.

Pope Benedict will leave the papacy on February 28.
