FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO) -- A story so crazy it must be true.
In 1945, a Fruita farmer chopped off the head of an unsuspecting rooster named Mike. But instead of dying like every other fowl, Mike continued to live.
For 18 months, his owner fed him grain and water with an eyedropper, and as the bird continued to grow, the farmer put him on a national tour until the miracle chicken passed on.
Now, western Colorado celebrates the medical marvel that was Miracle Mike with a festival in his name.
The 2013 Mike the Headless Chicken Festival runs Friday, May 17 to Saturday, May 18.
While Mike's life wasn't so tropical, you can get a chance to stick your toes in the sand and celebrate the theme for this year: Mikeritaville. Activities will include sand castle building, a tike bar, sand volleyball and limbo contests.
