Salt Lake flights diverted to GJ Airport

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Delta Airlines diverts its jets to Grand Junction after the Salt Lake City International Airport closes due to icy conditions.

More than ten flights have already made unexpected landings at the Grand Junction Regional Airport. About five are regional planes, and the rest are larger, 150-passenger jets, according to airport spokesperson Amy Jordan.

She says scheduled Grand Junction flights shouldn’t be affected, except those going in and out of Salt Lake City. There are still plenty of places to park, though the ramps are starting to fill up.

Passengers from the diverted flights are getting off the planes and staying in the secured area of the terminal.

Jordan says she expects the Salt Lake airport to reopen soon.

Freezing rains have caused the runways to ice over. This morning, a Frontier plane slid on the runway while landing. It arrived safely, but officials decided to close the rest of the runways as a precaution.
