Saving Sadie

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Despite her preference for long hair and her nerves, Kelly Higgins shaved off her long locks for her niece that was recently diagnosed with leukemia.

"I didn't intend on shaving my head for donations or anything, I just intended on doing because Sadie is doing it today and I didn't want her to do it alone,” says Kelly Higgins.

Seventeen year-old Sadie's Harper was initially misdiagnosed with mono after several emergency room visits.

It wasn't until earlier this month that her family received the devastating news that she's suffering from an advanced form of leukemia.

"She will be in Denver for six months receiving her chemo because they found that 60% of her bone marrow cells are cancer,” says Higgins.

Sadie's cause is one that hit close to home for salon manager, Doris Castro, who volunteered her time to shave Kelly's hair.

From the outside it may just seem like hair but to Sadie, Kelly's simple act of love serves to remind her of the support she will have throughout her treatments.
