Spring snow: a day off or more work?

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- The overnight spring snowstorm made for an unusual day of work for some around town. The snow granted some a day off; others had to put in extra hours.

Paul Trujillo, patrol supervisor for Colorado Department of Transportation, started his plow shift at 3 a.m. today and worked a 12-hour shift clearing I-70 between Fruita and Cameo. He said this time of the year, CDOT crews are usually paving roads, not plowing roads.

“We had the plows off and we were getting ready to unbuckle the trucks and we were ready to set things up for winter,” Trujillo said.

On the other hand, many staff at Tiara Rado Golf Course had the day off work as heavy, wet snow covered the greens of the course.

“Obviously there’s not much to do so we had to have some people stay home,” said Head PGA Pro Mike Mendelson. “The revenue is going to be tough but we’ll be able to make it up because the golf course, when we get it going, should be in amazing shape.”

Mendelson said he’s hoping to have the course open as soon as possible, but if the snow melts all at once, it may take longer due to standing water and puddles on the course.

The snow also complicated matters for City of Grand Junction maintenance employees, since the same equipment they use for snow removal is currently being used for spring clean up.

Darren Starr, City of Grand Junction Streets and Solid Waste Manager, said though crews may be slightly behind schedule for spring cleanup due to the weather, he still expects cleanup will be completed on the northern part of town, north of North Avenue, by this weekend.
