MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) -- School is out, and Memorial weekend is the unofficial start to summer vacation.

This week is pool safety awareness week, so officials at the Mesa County Health Department want to remind parents of ways to keep kids safe and healthy this year.

Mesa County Health Department Program Manager Matt Sinclair said chlorine does a good job of killing most bacteria, but there are a few to watch out for.

"If you are sick or vomiting in the pool or diarrhea in the pool and it is a crypto-related illness and you spread that in the pool, normal disinfection levels take a long time," said Sinclair.

Recreation Coordinator for the City of Grand Junction Pete Ashman said pool staff do their best to keep the water clean.

"From a maintenance stand point, we are at the highest level possible," said Ashman.

On a normal day, the Lincoln Park pool is staffed with 11 life guards, and on free day, 16 are on hand.

"Get in the water with your kids; a lot of parents don't want to get in their swimsuits and don't want to get wet, but the truth is and the studies have shown the closer you are to your kids when they are in the water, the quicker they are going to learn to swim and the safer they are going to be," said Ashman.

Officials said when it comes to staying healthy, keep it clean; wash your body with soap before and after getting in a public pool.

To avoid any potty mistakes in the pool, take your kids out every 30 to 60 minutes for a bathroom break.
