Fantasy football growing, offers unique competition

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) It's late August and that familiar, much anticipated football feeling is back in the air, blanketing the western slope.

And while most people in Colorado are pulling for the Denver Broncos, the emerging trend of fantasy football creates a peculiar conflict of interest.

"You get to watch all the games for all the different teams and keep up with all the players from the whole NFL," Scott Kuhloie, a freshman at Colorado Mesa said.

"I always want my Broncos to win but sometimes my fantasy league gets pretty heated. When the Broncos are playing the Ravens and I have the Ravens' defense, I want them to do good but I want my Broncos to do better."

The relatively new gaming genre is becoming so popular that sports bars like Buffalo Wild Wins have begun offering Draft Day Packages, which are big time deal for groups of fantasy players that want to use the restaurant as their war room.

Perhaps the thing that makes fantasy football so intriguing is the variety.

No two leagues are alike, and players have been known to make monetary wagers from week-to-week, have creative team names, and issue victory and shaming trophies for those who earn them.

"We're going to have best offense and best defense (trophies) in the league," Isaac Morales, a senior at CMU said. "We have little made-up trophies and they're all named after our professors here at CMU."

Players say they like the friendly trash talk, bragging rights, and the using fantasy football as a means to stay in contact with their friends.
