Memorial Day weekend kicks off the busy travel season for many families and rather than flying many choose to drive.

Authorities say the summer months are the deadliest times on Colorado roads
and whether its 50 days or 100 officials want travelers to be safe as they hit the road.

"So far, just within a week, we have had two crashes in the same night, both involving speed and alcohol resulting in at least 2 fatalities" said Trooper Dan Chermok, Colorado State Patrol.

It's no surprise as the holiday weekend moves in the threat for road accidents increases and officials say it's going to stick around through the 100 days of summer.

With summer driving, comes summer construction, and that means drivers need to keep both hands on the wheel and be careful.
"We do have state patrol in a lot of work zones most of the time that are doing traffic enforcement for speed and driving habits through there", said Chermok.

But it's not all about driving and road conditions, authorities say one of the biggest troubles on the road during these 100 days is drunk drivers.
"We see an increase in impaired related driving increase, to give you an example, last year during this same enforcement weekend. there were 542 dui arrest throughout the state", said Darrell Lingk, Colorado Department of Transportation.

State patrol says that is 542 too many, and that residents driving this weekend and through the summer need to be responsible.

With Memorial Day just around the bend, if you are heading out for the weekend, law enforcement will be out for DUI checkpoints.

Law enforcement wants to remind you that if you do cross paths with an impaired driver on the road you can call star c-s-p with a location and they will help respond to the concern.
