GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. During a fire, our firefighters are the first line of defense... But without the proper training facilities, they're at a disadvantage.

The Grand Junction Fire Department currently uses a classroom in the Fire Administration building to help train recruits.

But for the hands-on stuff, they have to drive to a different location, The Grand Junction Regional Center on D-rd.

Hopefully, this routine won't last much longer. "The advantage of having a training center is that it creates [efficiency] for training," says Grand Junction Fire Chief, Ken Watkins. "It puts everything in a central location."

They do their best to take full advantage of the regional facility but fire officials say the conditions aren't ideal.

However, plans for building a facility at the brand new Colorado Law Enforcement Center near Whitewater, are well underway.
