MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) An elderly Mesa County man has died from complications of the West Nile Virus.
The man was likely infected with the virus in late August or early September, according to health department officials.
He is the first Mesa County death related to the virus this year.
"Ultimately it's a really good reminder that West Nile Virus can be a really serious illness," says Mesa County Health Department spokesperson, Veronica Daehn Harvey. "It's important to take precautions."
West Nile can cause encephalitis or meningitis, especially among the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.
Six Mesa County residents have been diagnosed with West Nile this year. Of those, three suffered uncomplicated fevers and three developed encephalitis or meningitis.
