Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) --- Construction workers began the process of removing 960 chairs from the Avalon Theater Monday.

"One of our biggest complaints was that our chairs were not comfortable," said Stuart Taylor, Avalon Theater general manager. "They were old they were used and those chairs are going bye bye."

The chairs will be replaced by 1100 new ones as a part of a ten-month renovation project.

"It’s important to have that as an icon for downtown Grand Junction," Taylor said. "It has a lot of good years left in it and we’re going to get the best out of it we can."

All of the metal from the seats will be recycled. Some of the chairs will be saved for local artists to decorate and they will be placed around the community to serve as a reminder of the local landmark.

The Avalon Theater is set to reopen in June.
