Grand Junction, Colo (KKCO) -- This week marks the annual Emergency Medical Services week to honor first responders in Mesa County.
About 325 medical providers are being recognized for their contributions to keeping the community safe.
Seventy of those 325 will be given the Phoenix Award, which is awarded to individuals who have responded to cardiac arrest victims who have flatlined and are virtually dead. The EMS person had to treat them quickly and send them home alive without any neurological damage to qualify for the award.
Half of the people being honored are volunteers who drop what they are doing at a moment's notice and respond to situations when needed.
