Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) --- The Salvation Army is working to guarantee children have the supplies they need for the start of the school year, while also having some fun in the process.
The charity is hosting its annual Back to School Party until Aug. 1 complete with new backpacks filled to the brim with school supplies along with a variety of entertainment.
On Wednesday, local pirates took over the Salvation Army to get children motivated about getting back to learning at school.
"We thought this would be something cool for the kids to come and see all the things about the pirates," said Terrie Wilson, a major at the Salvation Army. "So they've set up today and are teaching kids different things about being a pirate."
The children had to sign up in advance and were assigned a day to come in to celebrate the end of summer and get their backpack, but Wilson said she encourages the children to enjoy the festivities going on all week.
"We have about 111 kids here today," Wilson said. "About half of those have already been here this week," Wilson said. "So they just keep coming back to enjoy the activities and see what else we're going to do."
On Thursday, the Salvation Army will put on a carnival for the children with a bounce house, cotton candy and snow cones.
For the final day of the party on Friday, the children will be staying cool in the parking lot, which will be converted into a water park.
