More families needed to host exchange students

GRAND JUNCTION,Colo. For students all across the world coming to America for a year is a dream comes true.

They get to spend the year as a student in the United States and attend local schools.

But not all kids will get that experience this year since there is a shortage of families to host them.

Riina Krauss is community coordinator for the council for educational travel in the USA, an organization that helps kids and families come together in the exchange student program and she said the experience she had as an exchange student herself will stay with her forever.

“The first few days were chaotic and I was scared and nervous, but then it turned out to be the most amazing year of my life," said Krauss.

The Watson family is currently hosting their third exchange student, and said it has been a life changing experience for them as a family.

Jennifer Watson said opening her home to Mikkel, an exchange student from Denmark has been so rewarding and she said after just a month he is already another member of their family.

"I highly recommend it for any family you don't have to be special or do anything special for these kids you just have a heart and just want to open your home to a new experience," said Watson.

District 51 schools are no longer accepting exchange students since the school year is already underway, but other area schools like Delta High school is still accepting applications.

A minimum of 6 families are needed immediately in our area; with dozens more looking for families to stay with across the program as a whole.
