Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) – Citizens are getting an up-close look at what it's like to be a first responder or to work behind the scenes of law enforcement.

The class is called the Citizens Academy, and it gives students hands-on experience with a fake crime scene investigation. From examining blood splatter to collecting DNA evidence, these students were taught how to do it all.

"I’m looking at a future in law enforcement, and I thought this would be a great way not only to see this department but see all the other departments that work hand in hand to keep Grand Junction safe," says Ben Johnson, a student in the class.

The class is held every Thursday night. On April 4, the class learned about forensics and what it’s like to arrive on a crime scene.

"It brings it all full circle. They're learning about evidence, crime scene investigation. They're learning about the actual investigation with the detectives," says Mary Speer, a Grand Junction police service technician.

The instructors set up a mock crime scene that the students walked through. They worked with team members to figure out what happened, paying attention to even the smallest detail.

At the end of the night, they gathered in the classroom to discuss different theories of what they think may have happened.

This is the fifth time the 12-week academy has been held in a partnership between the Grand Junction Police Department and Grand Junction Fire Department.
