The path from starting a business to retirement can be a long one and a recent Gallup survey shows more Americans are waiting longer before retiring. But that is not the case for one woman, who’s opening her own store after a dream that has been in the making for more than a few years, in fact, Ludene Smith is quilting her way into the business world and she's having such a great time retirement isn't even on her radar.
"This has been a dream, I always wanted a business of my own", said Ludene Smith, of Ludene’s Simply Quilting.
There's no age limit when it comes to following your dreams and that's this 74-year-old entrepreneur's motto.
"I was getting older, and crankier, I had to do something, I had to keep busy, that's why I decided to do this", said Smith.
There's nothing old or cranky about Ludene's Simply Quilting. Ludene actually owns one fancy machine that's one of a kind.
"I think this is going to be perfect for the whole state because this is the only machine like it", said Smith.
That fancy machine is nearly 4-thousand pounds of quilting machinery which can help service your quilting projects for a good price. Customers are already flowing in and excited for the store to be right here in Montrose.
“I was really surprised that a business like this for quilting would be here, so I was just tickled to death", said Theresa Nelson, local quilter.
“I think this is really good for the community, we have so many quilters in Montrose and the surrounding area", said Elma Ross, local supporter.
Ludene is already feeling the community support and says she's slowly stitching her way into the local business quilt.
"Everyone we asked to come down said, 'oh yeah we will be there" so it's nice, I have a lot of friends"
The store held its grand opening at the beginning of the month. So far Ludene says the business has been off to a strong start and she has just been overwhelmed by the support from the community.
Ludene's Simply Quilting is located at 12059 6300 Rd in Montrose.
