Hearings to Start In Challenge to Lethal Injection in Ohio

Elyria, Ohio (AP) A judge in Ohio will start hearing arguments today over whether the state's lethal injection procedure is constitutional.

Two men facing murder charges -- and possibly the death penalty if convicted -- say the procedure doesn't give the quick and painless deaths required by law.

The major criticism is that the procedure could prove excruciatingly painful if not enough anesthetic is administered or if the executioner makes mistakes in injecting the drugs.

Two anesthesiologists are scheduled to testify -- one on behalf of the defendants, that other on behalf of the state.

Lethal injections are on hold nationally while the Supreme Court considers a challenge in a case from Kentucky.
