New York (AP) Stress experts say turmoil in the workplace is triggering some unhealthy responses like eating too much high-calorie comfort food, sugar bingeing, avoiding exercise, drinking too much and sleeping too little.
Dr. Esther Sternberg of the National Institute of Mental Health says stress can cause the release of hormones and nerve chemicals that weaken the immune system and slow the body's ability to heal wounds.
And work stress expert David Ballard says it could all add up to more absenteeism and reduced productivity on the job.
Doctor Lynn Field, clinical counselor and expert in eating disorders and anxiety, says it doesn't do a stressed person any good to cave to unhealthy urges. She recommends instead, turning off the news, breathing deeply, exercising, getting counseling and
perhaps changing jobs.
