Senate Deals Bush a Defeat on Iraq War Spending

Capitol Hill (AP) Republican senator Robert Bennett says it shows President Bush “has no political capital left.”

A majority of GOP senators broke with Bush in joining a veto-proof 75-22 vote to add tens of billions of dollars for veterans and the unemployed to a war funding bill. The measure provides 165 billion dollars to pay for military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq through spring, when there'll be a new president.

Bush has promised to veto the funding measure if it exceeds his request. And he has enough GOP support in the house to sustain a veto there.
