White House (AP) President Bush's backers and critics are locked in a new debate over a book by former White House press secretary Scott McClellan, slamming the president and the war in Iraq.
Bush's current press secretary, Dana Perino, dismisses her predecessor as “disgruntled” and says the president is “puzzled” by McClellan's assertions. Bush's first Press Secretary, Ari Fleischer, wonders about McClellan's sudden turnaround. Fleischer says McClellan had never expressed any misgivings before.
McClellan says if people read his book they'll understand his dramatic shift, especially his conclusion that invading Iraq knocked the administration “terribly off course”.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton says the book is essentially an apology.
Republican John McCain says he hasn't read the former insider's book but is glad Saddam Hussein is no longer in Iraq.
