New York (AP) New Yorkers are trying to figure out the effect of the governor's order for state agencies to recognize same-sex marriages performed out of state.

Governor David Paterson says he's just following the law by requiring New York agencies to treat same sex couples who are legally married elsewhere as legally married in New York.

Alan Van Capelle is executive director of the Empire State Pride Agenda, and he says it's a big deal. He says it means gay couples who crossed the border to get married in Massachusetts or Canada are out of legal limbo.

Gay marriage opponents say they're not sure the governor's order is legal.

Religious and social conservatives have vowed to fight the directive. They say it flouts traditional values and is a big step toward legalizing same-sex unions in New York.
