Senate GOP Blocks Oil Taxes

Washington (AP) Senate Democrats have failed to push through a proposal to tax the windfall profits of the five largest U.S. oil companies.

GOP senators blocked the measure, arguing that the democratic legislation wouldn't solve the country's energy crisis.

New Mexico Republican senator Pete Domenici says “people are clammoring for relief at the pump” but he warns that the bill would have given them “exactly what they don't
Want” with higher taxes and increased oil imports.

The Democrats fell nine votes short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a GOP filibuster against the energy package.
