Franklin, Ind. (AP) Tornadoes and as much as 10 inches of rain have battered Indiana, with one hospital forced to evacuate patients.

More than 100 patients and doctors have been removed from Columbus hospital, which is 40 miles south of Indianapolis. Roads around the hospital are underwater.

Hoosier state governor Mitch Daniels has declared an emergency in 17 counties.

Several roads and interstates across Indiana remain closed because of flood waters, and neighborhoods all over the state are seeing more boats on the roads than cars. People are being evacuated to higher ground.

Severe thunderstorms also spun off tornados around Chicago and in Wisconsin. Some injuries have been reported in those areas.
