GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) A new study shows a possible link between high levels of a chemical found in some manufactured products and miscarriage.

Bisphenol-A, or BPA, can be found in plastic water bottles, food containers and the lining of canned goods. It is released when these things are heated up, such as when a water bottle sits in a hot car.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine's study of 115 pregnant women with a history of infertility problems found a connection between higher levels of BPA in a woman's blood and the likelihood that she suffered a miscarriage.

There are a variety of factors that contribute to miscarriages, but environmental exposure is one, local midwife Patty Kandiko said.

"Everything from mercury in fish, to lead in paint, to BPA in plastics that we have in our environment now that we didn't years and years ago," Kandiko said.

Carla Russell, a new mom, started buying BPA-free products five years ago after hearing about the health risks.

"Just with my own water bottles I started doing it," Russell said. "And then when she came along I started looking for bottles that were BPA free."

She said it's interesting to hear BPA could have gotten in the way of having her now four-month-old baby girl, Joby.

"I guess if I hadn't started doing BPA-free myself if it would've cause something earlier on," Russell said.

American Society for Reproductive Medicine researchers said there is still more research to be done.
