Thieves are stealing social security checks from thousands of seniors by re-routing direct deposit payments.
New York Senator Charles Schumer says current policy makes it easy for scammers to steal checks.
He says thieves are having checks deposited to their own accounts by simply providing a social security number and birth date.
"So there are lots of ways to scam the system. But every one of them could be stopped dead in its tracks by one simple word: notification,” said Schumer.
Schumer wants the Social Security Administration to contact seniors and verify the account change before a check is deposited.
