Government Shutdown: Day 10 & Meetings Planned Today

WASHINGTON (AP) Here's what's happening today on Capitol Hill to address the nation's budget crisis:

This morning the Senate Finance Committee is holding hearings on the debt limit. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is testifying.

If Congress doesn't agree to raise the debt limit by October 17th, it could affect the country's ability to pay its debts.

Raising the debt limit would allow the government to pay the bills its already accrued.

Republican leaders will meet with President Obama today at the White House to discuss a short term deal to raise the debt ceiling while negotiations continue.

But that would not have any affect on the ongoing government shutdown.

President Obama met with the House Democratic Caucus Wednesday.

There's mounting pressure to end this from the business community. The National Retail Federation, US Chamber of Commerce and National Association of Manufacturers are all asking Republicans to back down.
