Political debate: Are Americans better off?

Are Americans better off than before Barack Obama was elected president?

That's a question being debated today by the presidential campaigns.

Vice President Joe Biden says the answer is yes. At a Labor Day rally in Detroit, he led the chant: "Osama bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive."

But Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, campaigning in Greenville, N.C., says the years under President Jimmy Carter "look like the good old days compared to where we are now."

Obama's supporters are insisting Americans are better off a day after Maryland's Democratic governor said the answer was "no." Martin O'Malley revised his remarks today, telling CNN "we are clearly better off," though "we have not recovered all that we lost."

Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus says today's happier talk from Democrats must mean that in one day, "23 million Americans have found jobs, incomes have gone up, gas prices are going down, poverty is in decline and the deficit has been cut."

As for regular Americans, 28 percent of those questioned in a recent Associated Press-GfK poll said they were better off than four years ago, while 36 percent said they were worse off. Another 36 percent said they were about the same.

In excess of 10% unemployment cannot be stated as better off in any way, shape or form.

Nope but my 3 percent per year cola and my 5 percent per year private sector job, not in good old malfunction junction, but I have degrees too. You should not cry so much because you live in a place where wages have always suked. Cry me a river.

I am better off however, I do know that most are not better off. I will continue to be better off regardless of who wins the presidency.

Same here. Life is beautiful. Education, skill and work ethics go a long way. Don't get why all the whining - bunch of people on the road in restaurants, mall and playing with their toys outdoors. If you can't find the job ask yourself if improved economy will change that. Maybe your skill is outdated and you need to expand into other area.

Boo hoo, does the truth hurt you so much that you have to call people liars? You must have not lived in gj long enough to realize that they pay the lowest wages on the west slope? Have you also not realized that an education will enable you to choose your own destiny? Make more money and get away from a dead end job? Please do not confuse gj with the way things are everywhere. Even when we hit full recovery, gj jobs will still be 40 percent less than the national average. Gj was born of boom and bust and always will. I am sorry that you have a hard time with reality. I know I am one of the lucky ones, this did not happen by sitting on my behind in gj and waiting for opportunity to find me, I had to sieze the day. Most just wait, hope and pray but do little other than snivel and whine woe is me. I feel sorry for you and your predicament but what do you expect? At the end of the day it is still gj, at least you have some good views.

NOT, As I watched a new feed this a.m. it was put to us that Obama has increased the deficit more in his 3 1/2 years in office than Bush did in all of his 8 but yet, Democrats still blame Bush. With Bush going into his 2nd term and 911 taking place, he didn't stand a chance, he was doomed before he started. I would HATE to think of how Obama would have reacted on 911. Seems to me it is time for a change.

Me thinks invade Astan, go after the Taliban and not invade Iraq for no reason other than Sadam trying to assassinate your daddy. Put all resources into Astan, troops home now.

GM is out to file bankruptcy again; Government jobs are the only jobs that were increased. There is no one in the Democratic Party is smarter than Joe Biden. We are a weaker country after Obama’s apology tour, and the bowing to lower forms of Governmental Heads. As a “true American”, we bow to no one. Obama would have known this if he was raised in the USA and not south Asia, by a polygamist father and Muslims.

Actually GM is posting record profits. GM did not need the bailout. It was hush money to keep them from doing a clean restructure which would have hurt union labor. Obama still needs to go!

GM is not posting record profits. They are still in debt to the government. obama saved the union, not GM.

GM is only alive because Obama has replaced the Federal Fleet with new GM vehicles.
