Presidential campaigns most expensive in history

The presidential election is on-track to be the costliest campaign ever.

Numbers released late Thursday show President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney have received a total $1.7 billion in donations.

If you add in $300 million in super PAC contributions and tens of millions from nonprofit groups, donations now top 2-billion dollars.

In 2008, $2.4 billion was spent on the presidential race.

At the current rate, this year's election is on track to be the most expensive in U.S. History.

So where has all the money gone? Most is now showing up in the form of television campaign ads in battleground states.
